1. I can't get your brushes to open in Paint Shop Pro.
There can be several reasons for this:
- You must be using Paint Shop Pro version 5+, 6+ or 7+. Versions earlier than 5 did not support custom brushes.
- Do not try to open the brush file as if it were an image. PSP will give you an error message saying that it isn't a recognized file format.
You can only access custom brushes through the Custom Brush dialogue box. For a more detailed explanation, see the
'accessing' section of my brush tutorial.
- You may have a corrupt cache file. See question #3 for more information on this and how to fix it.

2. I can't get some Photoshop brushes (.abr files) that I downloaded to work in Paint Shop Pro.
- Custom brushes created in Adobe Photoshop version 6 or 7 cannot be used in Paint Shop Pro. There is no way to convert them.
If the person who created the brushes also provides the images used to create the brushes, you can turn those images into PSP brushes
(see my tutorial for how). Photoshop brushes created with version 5.5 or earlier can be used in
Paint Shop Pro - you don't need to convert or rename them. For more information on using Photoshop brushes in Paint Shop Pro, and using
Paint Shop Pro brushes in Photoshop, see page 2 of my brush tutorial.

3. I've followed all of the directions in your tutorial, but some of my brushes still don't
show up in my Custom Brush window.
If you're using Paint Shop Pro version 7, it's possible that your brush cache file is corrupt. Earlier versions of PSP didn't use individual
cache files the way PSP 7 does, so the following information does not apply to those versions.
- Before doing anything with your cache files, double check that the brush file you're trying to access is indeed in an active folder.
See the 'organizing' section of my tutorial for more information on this.
- So you've double checked everything, and your brushes still don't display properly in the Custom Brush dialogue box. A corrupt cache
file could be to blame. Don't worry, it's easy to fix.
- Close Paint Shop Pro and open Windows Explorer (Start | Programs | Windows Explorer or hold down the 'Windows' key and press the letter 'e').
- Navigate to your Paint Shop Pro Cache folder. The default location is: C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\Cache.
- Delete the 'Brushes.jpc' file.
- Close Windows Explorer and reopen PSP. Next time you go to access your custom brushes, a fresh new cache file will be created.
- If this doesn't fix your problem, one of your actual brush files could be corrupt. If that's the case, you'll just have to recreate those
brush tips or redownload the brush file in question.
- If all else fails, you will have to contact Jasc Technical Support. They are the professionals - not me. You can email them at:
psp7sup@jasc.com or techsup@jasc.com or visit the support page
on their website at http://www.jasc.com/support.asp.

4. Can PSP brushes be used in other programs?
Other than Adobe Photoshop, I don't know. But people keep asking me, so I thought I'd better put it in here. I don't know.
I use Paint Shop Pro almost exclusively. I do have Photoshop 6, and use it occasionally, but that's it. I love PSP and have
little use for any other graphics program, so I'm not the person to be asking. ::grin::
